SXSW 2012
2012-03-21
Last week we packed our bags and headed to Austin for the South By Southwest festival. (SXSW if you're cool) We wanted to make this into an experience so instead of flying like most sane human beings we decided to rent an RV and head on our own little American adventure.
Along the way we stopped by Third Man Records owned by Mr. Jack White of the White Stripes.
The shop was small but it was pretty cool inside. Most of the building is used for a recording studio and there was a band in there at the time so sadly our exploring was limited.
Our phones were constantly dead so we had to find other way to amuse our selves. Some of us like to play cards...some of us had more fun cheating :)
When your driving for days cross country it's the beautiful moments like this that really make life worth whi-OH MY GOD PORN!!!!!
We finally arrived in Austin and just in time for the action! Downtown Austin was a mass of people; everyone from local college students to big time music industry people were crammed together and having a blast.
Of course the whole point of SXSW is to checkout new bands and we were not disappointed. The first band we saw was Vacationer (Fronted by Kenny Vasoli of The Starting Line and Person L)
Vacationer has a great relaxed vibe and I strongly recommend you check it out on spotify next time you're in the mood to put your feet up and just let yourself relax. On second thought Vacationer was a great name for this band since that's pretty much what you end up becoming when you listen to them.
Finally it was time for our very first SXSW showcase. We have never done a showcase here before so we weren't sure what to expect. Luckily we were able to team up with our friend Mike Marquies of Paradigm Entertainment and the show ended up being amazing!
Ahh...$4 20 oz miller lights. I will miss you.
The lineup for the show was amazing. We had The Early November, Fake Problems, We Are The In Crowd, Bad Rabbits, Now, Now, and Young Statues. We were proud to have our hometown homies We Are the In Crowd on our stage for this show and needless to say they killed it and the crowd loved it!
The highlight of my night was when Bad Rabbits took the stage. I had never heard of them before but I'm glad I did. The energy from these guys was intense and you could tell the entire crowd was feeling it. I got to meet with the singer Fredua and he was super cool laid back guy. You would never guess he just had the entire room going insane.
Fake Problems played a flawless set and the crowd was loving it too.
Now Now was another band that I had not heard yet but I was stoked once they got on stage. Great band with a great vibe.
And of course I can't leave out The Early November. We were all huge fans of this band growing up so to have them playing OUR showcase was mind blowing to say the least. If I was to travel back in time and tell 16 year old me that this would happen 16 year old me would probably kick my ass. (16 year old me was in way better shape)
I don't think there was a single person who didn't end up in the air at some point during their set. The band seemed to have a lot more energy than I remember at past shows. Some band just get better with age and this is definitely one of them.
Thanks to all our friends and new friends who came out to the showcase. We all had a blast (how could you not with these bands?) and we are already getting excited for 2013!
