Our good friend Adam is one of our favorite tour photographers, and has toured with some of our favorite bands- All Time Low, Pierce the Veil, Of Mice and Men, Tonight Alive, a Day to Remember, and a lot more. We asked him a few questions about his road essentials, gear, and some tips on how to shoot shows:
GK: Who have you toured with?
AE: A Day To Remember, All Time Low, Pierce The Veil, Of Mice & Men, Bring Me The Horizon, Lindsey Stirling, Silverstein, Tonight Alive, Asking Alexandria, Breathe Carolina, The Devil Wears Prada and one time I drove to LA on my own.
GK: Favorite show you’ve shot?
AE: Best shot - the best show I shot recently was actually the same as the hardest show I shot. Reading and Leeds with ADTR. The best shows for me have nothing to do with the settings and have everything to do with the bands vibe during the show. After you shoot a band a couple hundred times, you really connect with them while they are playing… well at least I can read them on stage. I can tell when its a bad show for them, a good, show, or an amazing show- and when everything runs just right, the energy you feel is an indescribable feeling. I just care about the people I shoot a lot, so its exhilarating to see them so happy.
GK: What’s the hardest show you’ve ever shot?
AE: I think the hardest shows for me are usually the ones that turn out the best. Because to me, its never the circumstances that are difficult - i can adjust accordingly with my gear set. Its the pressure of what I am covering. For example, big shows for ADTR, like Reading and Leeds in UK this year- such big shows for the band and their career, I wanted to make sure I accurately captured them! It means a lot to me to get the shots for the band. Not just for now, but in 20 years, they will love these images. Doing it so the future knows the past. Photos don’t lie… much.
GK: Any tips for shooting a live show?
AE: Practice, start at small local venues and work your way up. The experience you will get is unteachable and very valuable.
GK: What gear do you bring on tour? How do you travel with it?
AE: All of it. I use Think Tank bags. Its hard to explain. So here is a few videos a blog„ here is my gear list, and here is a photo. Ta da!
